Recently I had the pleasure of leading an online masterclass for women business owners and senior leaders tackling imposter syndrome. After years of coaching high-achieving women, I know how pervasive and disheartening imposter syndrome can be. Many feel it’s an insurmountable challenge, which is why it’s one of my favourite topics to discuss—because, by the end of the session, these inspiring leaders walk away feeling lighter, empowered, and ready to take the next step in their journey.
What Is Imposter Syndrome?
To begin, I always explore what imposter syndrome really is. Often, we attach labels to our insecurities, and these labels can feel isolating or burdensome. During the session, I invite everyone to share their experiences with imposter syndrome—and I share mine as well.
It might surprise you to know that I still experience imposter syndrome occasionally. However, the more I’ve learned about it, the less disruptive it has become. Recognising the nature of imposter syndrome means that it no longer holds as much power over me, but this certainly wasn’t always the case.
My Personal Journey with Imposter Syndrome
In my early career as a Barrister, I struggled intensely with self-doubt. While imposter syndrome didn’t impact my work performance, it weighed heavily on me personally, causing immense stress and self-criticism. I felt others were more qualified, experienced, or simply “better.” In response, I pushed myself relentlessly, taking on increasingly complex cases, hoping that each success would finally make me feel “good enough.”
But I discovered a cycle, every time I reached a goal, after the initial joy at achieving it, the self-doubt returned, shifting the goalposts further and leaving me chasing a fleeting sense of self-assurance. The more I accomplished, the less confident I felt. It was as if two parts of me existed—the confident achiever and the self-doubter—each pulling me in different directions.
Understanding Imposter Syndrome to Move Past It
Years later, through confidence coaching and personal growth, I gained insight into the nature of own mind. I realised how much my insecurities were rooted in outdated beliefs and past experiences. This understanding became transformational. I no longer let old thought patterns control my present decisions. Now, I share this understanding of how our minds work with other female senior leaders and business owners, once you recognise the nature of imposter syndrome, that it is just a set of thoughts, you can begin to coexist in a healthy way, with it without letting it define you.
One of the most powerful outcomes of sharing my story—and encouraging others to share theirs—is seeing the collective relief as we realise how common these feelings are. Female leaders often feel pressured to present a flawless exterior, fearing that admitting insecurities might be perceived as weakness. Yet, sharing allows us to normalise these experiences, reminding each other that feeling insecure doesn’t make us inadequate—it makes us human.
The Power of Community in Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
One essential part of the journey is finding strength in community. So many women are surprised at how healing it can be to share these vulnerabilities with like-minded peers. Recognising that imposter syndrome is a shared experience fosters a powerful sense of connection, validating our feelings and dissolving the shame associated with them.
Through confidence coaching for female executives and business owners, I guide women to see that insecurities aren’t indicators of failure but simply passing thoughts with no information in them. This enables them build resilient business confidence, so they’re empowered to lead without the constant shadow of self-doubt.
Embrace Your Confidence and Lead with Resilience
Imposter syndrome doesn’t have to hold you back from stepping into the impactful leader you’re meant to be. Confidence isn’t about never feeling insecure—it’s about knowing that those feelings don’t define your capabilities or tell you anything about what the future holds. The more we understand the nature of our doubt, the less power imposter syndrome holds over us.
