Many of my clients are female senior leaders and business owners who spend some time envisioning where they’d like to be in six months, a year, or even further down the line. They outline ambitious goals and focus on the actionable next steps. Whilst having a vision can be an invaluable exercise, what truly matters is the journey they take—those powerful, incremental steps that often take them beyond where they can imagine.
Recently, I spoke with a client who had taken a series of bold steps over the last six months. Reflecting on her journey, she was amazed at how much she’d accomplished simply by taking “the next step”. She’d achieved things she hadn’t believed possible and was now venturing into realms far outside her comfort zone. Her achievements were impressive, but they brought on new challenges.
When the Next Level Feels Intimidating
Her new challenge? She found herself doing things she once thought were “only for other people”—those who seemed more qualified or naturally suited. Despite her accomplishments, she felt out of place, questioning her qualifications and wondering if she was “enough.” Sound familiar? As female leaders, many of us experience these moments when we wonder why we’ve been asked to step up, questioning if we’re truly capable or fearing that any day now, we’ll be “found out.”
In fact, this sense of self-doubt is incredibly common. So often, we find ourselves in positions where others clearly see our potential, yet we struggle to see it in ourselves. These feelings can hold us back and make our comfort zones, or what is known to us, feel like safe-havens. But staying within these self-imposed boundaries can limit us from reaching our full potential as leaders.
The Hidden Costs of Staying in Your Comfort Zone
During our conversation, it became clear that her fear was rooted in the discomfort of stretching beyond familiar territory. Our comfort zones give us a feeling of safety, but they can also stifle our growth. When we give in to that urge to stay safe, we miss out on invaluable opportunities and new experiences that enable us to grow as leaders. Instead of evolving, we remain stagnant—and sometimes, our world even starts to shrink.
For women in leadership, staying in the comfort zone can mean missing out on potential business growth, promotions, or the confidence to make transformative decisions. It’s a high cost to pay, and so it’s a pattern worth breaking.
Breaking Through: How to Dissolve Your Comfort Zone
So, how do we break out of this cycle? The key lies in understanding what our feelings of discomfort and self-doubt are really telling us. There was a time when I believed that these insecure thoughts were accurate reflections of my abilities, of my surroundings, or of what others truly thought of me.
If those thoughts had been trustworthy or up-to-date, hiding from challenges would have made sense. But I began to notice something important: many of these thoughts were based on old beliefs, past experiences, or insecurities that were years—even decades—out of date. They held no relevance to my current capabilities or potential.
Once I saw this, I realised that I didn’t need to be rid of those insecure thoughts to take meaningful action. I learned I could acknowledge these thoughts without letting them control my actions. By allowing those feelings to simply be, I found that they often passed on their own, without needing any intervention from me.
Practical Steps for Leaders to Embrace Growth Beyond Their Comfort Zones
For senior female leaders and business owners, recognising self-doubt as fleeting can be a transformative shift. It’s not about eliminating all insecurities but learning to co-exist with them. Here’s a few insights that may help:
- Acknowledge Your Thoughts Without Judgment: Notice when self-doubt arises, but don’t label it as “bad” or something you need to fix. Just acknowledge that it’s there and let it pass.
- Stay Present in the Moment: Rather than acting on past experiences or beliefs, focus on your current capabilities. Remind yourself that the past does not define your present or your future.
- Take Small, Purposeful Actions: Building confidence doesn’t require a giant leap. Often, taking consistent small steps outside your comfort zone will gradually dissolve those boundaries.
- Accept Discomfort as Part of Growth: Remember that discomfort is a natural part of growth. It’s simply your mind letting you know that it has no frame of reference, as it’s a new experience, it’s not telling you that it’s something to be afraid of.
- Recognise Your Wins, However Small: Reflect on each achievement and remind yourself of your progress. This will reinforce your confidence as you start to see the misleading nature of your doubtful thinking, over time it will help dismantle the habit of self-doubt.
We all have these moments of doubt and insecurity—myself included. But understanding the temporary nature of these thoughts can be liberating. It empowers us to take the opportunities in front of us without feeling we have to completely overcome every fear. See the thoughts for what they are, know they will pass, and trust that you will be okay.
